The LSAMP Undergraduate Research Program is subject to available funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF).


2019 Program Dates

June 3rd - July 27th



Program Eligibility Requirements:

  • Full time student attending one of the following schools"
    1. University System of Maryland LSAMP Participant Schools (UMDCP, UMES, UMBC)
    2. Frostburg University
    3. Towson University
    4. Any Community College in the State of Maryland
    5. University of Puerto Rico

***Priority will be given to Community College students interested in transferring to UMDCP

  • Rising Sophomore, Junior, or Senior
    • UMDCP students must be in the College of Computer, Mathematival and Natural Sciences, A. James Clark School of Engineering, or the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources
    • Community College students must be majoring in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) fields
    • Undergraduate college students at the University of Puerto Rico (Mayaguez or Rio Piedras campuses) must be majoring in STEM fields
  • U.S. Citizen or U.S. Permanent Resident
  • Minimum cumalative GPA of 2.8


Application Materials:

You must submit a complete online application for review, which includes the following:

  1. Application Form
  2. Personal essay and research interest essay
  3. Two (2) Letters of Recommendation and Recommendation Forms
  4. Unofficial transcript 
  5. Resume
  6. Citizenship documentation
  7. Summer 2019 List of courses (if applicable)

Selection Process:

After the application period ends, the selection process will have the following stages:


  1. Evaluation of Candidates
  2. Selection of Applicants for Interviews
  3. Interview Evaluations
  4. Review of Selected Applicants
  5. Final Selection of Applicants

***Please be Advised: Each application will be reviewed, and only online applications with all required  information and documentation will be eligible for further consideration. Any incomplete applications will be considered illegible and be immediately disregarded.


The summer program offers:

  • Student stipends of $3,000.00 for the summer
  • Faculty-student partnership to conduct cutting-edge research in the STEM fields
  • Access to available academic year research opportunities and professional conferences opportunities
  • Research preparation tools such as scientific writing, presentations, and professional workshops
  • Graduate School Preparation workshops
  • Possible graduate school visits to surrounding universities or research facility visit



  • Conduct research with a University of Maryland, College Park faculty member in the College of Computer, Mathematical and Natural Sciences, A. James Clark School of Engineering, of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources
  • Devote about 30-35 hours a week to the research project
  • Produce and submit a written research project report, approved by the faculty advisor, at the end of the summer and present research at culminating symposium
  • Participate in all LSAMP URP activities and workshops
  • Participate in seminars or colloquiua given by the College of Mathematical and Natural Sciences, A. James Clark School of Engineering, or College of Agriculture and Natural Resouces


**Students will have to identify a Research Mentor prior to the start of the Undergraduate Research Program.**

Final Application deadline is Sunday, April 14, 2019.
