National Science Foundation Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation Program

The Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) Program (www.nsf.gov) is aimed at increasing the quality and quantity of students successfully completing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) baccalaureate degree programs, and increasing the number of students interested in, academically qualified for and matriculating into programs of graduate study. LSAMP supports sustained and comprehensive approaches that facilitate achievement of the long-term goal of increasing the number of students who earn doctorates in STEM fields, particularly those from populations underrepresented in these fields.

The University of Maryland LSAMP is designed to assist students in developing the skills and learning the strategies that will guarantee their success in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. In 2000, a second five-year grant was awarded to the University System of Maryland LSAMP Program. The Center for Minorities in Science and Engineering of the Clark School of Engineering and the College of Computer, Mathematical and Physical Sciences at the University of Maryland College Park share this grant with the University of Maryland Baltimore County and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. As a result of this funding, students who attend the University of Maryland College Park benefit from a unique combination of academic, financial, and social support systems.
