Cost: $250 (Summer Program) Do not remit the $250 fee until you have received notification that you have been accepted into the program.
Program Description
The ESTEEM Research Mentoring Program offers opportunities in research to high school students who are considering careers in engineering. The program provides students who are interested in pursuing engineering as a major in college with the chance to learn more about research in engineering disciplines. These students will conduct an independent research project under the direction of an engineering faculty member.
Activities (Summer)
Students participate in a two-week program where they will explore engineering research by attending research lectures, lab demonstrations, development of a research proposal development and the literature search and review for your research project.
Activities (Academic Year)
Seniors who participate in the summer and who have a research project requirement will have an academic year long independent project with a faculty member which will result in a final paper and participation in a research symposium in the spring of 2013. Parent/student will need to provide their own transportation to campus. University shuttle bus is available for schools that are on SHUTTLE-UM routes.
Eligibility
To be considered for the ESTEEM Program students must correctly complete the entire application packet and meet the following eligibility requirements:
- Targeted groups for this program are from underrepresented ethnic groups: African American, American Indian, and Latino/Hispanic
- Have a significant and demonstrated interest in and aptitude for a career in engineering
- Have an interest in attending the University of Maryland College Park and majoring in engineering
- Have completed the 11th grade by June 2012
- Be available to participate in the summer component (2 weeks)
- Be available to participate 6-8 hours per week during the academic year
- Completed at least two college preparatory mathematics courses such as Algebra I, Algebra II, or Geometry and completed at least two science course such as Biology, Chemistry or Physics
- Completion of a 500 word essay titled Why I Want to be an Engineer.
- Participate in a formal interview, if chosen as a finalist
- Demonstration of excellent oral and written communication skills
- Submission of a minimum of two recommendations—one from a math teacher and one from a science teacher.
- Submission of your most current official transcript which includes SAT and/or PSAT and/or ACT scores. A copy of the most up-to-date report card showing your most recent coursework is also required.
- Be available on a full-time basis (Monday-Friday) for the entire duration of the 2-week summer program
- Be available to come to campus between 4 days per week (Science and Technology Program participants) or 5-10 hours per week (students who are not participants in the Science and Technology Program)
- Students with a senior year research requirement or science fair project are encouraged to apply
How To Apply
- Student must print out and complete the application, the Science/Technology/Engineering/Math Course Form, and the 500 word essay Form.
- Parent must print out and complete the Parental Data Form.
- Print out and give to a recommendation form to give to one (1) math teacher and one science teacher. Student, please mail the completed teacher recommendations.
- Mail a copy of your high school transcript and a copy of your 11th grade report card through the last marking period.
