Program Overview

S.P.I.C.E.: Students with Potential and Interest, Considering Engineering

Co-Sponsored by: Center for Minorities in Science and Engineering and the Women in Engineering Program

S.P.I.C.E ProgramS.P.I.C.E. Camp is a one-week commuter program for young women who will be entering the 9th and 10th grade next fall and would like to learn more about engineering. Students will be introduced to the world of engineering through projects, tours, and guest speakers. Each activity is intended to highlight the relevance of engineering in our daily life and how engineering can work to improve societal problems. All activities will be supervised by current engineering students and conducted in a safe learning environment at the University of Maryland, College Park.

As a bonus, students will be familiarized with the engineering entrance requirements for college. Students that are interested in obtaining an engineering degree with have the chance to work with Clark School of Engineering staff to plan out what courses to take in high school to prepare for a college engineering program.

Program Dates

Date: June 26th - June 30th  
Time: 9:00am - 4:00pm


The $350 cost per student covers all project materials, transportation once on campus, and a morning and afternoon snack. Students should plan to bring their lunch. Payments should only be sent after student has been admitted to the program.


The application deadline is March 31st. Decisions will be announced in mid April.

Your complete application must include the following items:

  • Essay should respond to the question: "What can be done to encourage young women and minorities to pursue engineering?"
    **It is important to check for spelling and grammatical errors. Hint: Type your essay response in a word processing program first, review it for errors, then copy and paste it into the text box on the application form.**
  • Official Middle/High School Transcript
    If the classes you are currently enrolled in are not listed on the transcipt, please attach a list of current classes.
  • Recommendation must be printed on school letter head, and sealed in a signed envelope. Teacher should address your classroom behavior, ability and interest, specifically in math, science and engineering (if applicable).
