GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) is a program designed to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education. GEAR UP provides six-year grants to states and partnerships to provide services at high-poverty middle and high schools. GEAR UP grantees serve an entire cohort of students beginning no later than the seventh grade and follow the cohort through high school. GEAR UP funds are also used to provide college scholarships to low-income students.

Funds for the GEAR UP CAMP at the University of Maryland were provided by a grant from the Maryland Higher Education Commission via the College Preparation Intervention Program (CPIP). These funds support college partnership activities for eligible GEAR UP sites. CPIP provides funds for partnerships between higher education institutions and GEAR UP sites to raise the level of academic preparedness of GEAR UP students. In prior years, projects funded by CPIP have included activities such as academic enrichment mini-courses held at college campuses and research centers, career exploration research online with follow-up activities on campus, professional development for teachers, financial aid workshops for parents, and tutoring by college students at the GEAR UP schools.
