The 2009 Summer Bridge Program for Scientists and Engineers is seeking three dedicated students to serve as undergraduate mentors. The Bridge Program is designed for academically talented incoming freshmen who plan to major in engineering, computer science, mathematics, or the physical sciences, and will be held June 28 – July 31, 2009. The Summer Bridge Program is sponsored by the Center for Minorities in Science and Engineering and the College of Computer, Mathematical and Physical Sciences (CMPS). POSITION TITLE:
Undergraduate Mentor (3)
DEPARTMENT:
Center for Minorities in Science and Engineering
QUALIFICATIONS:
Proficient in Algebra, Pre-Calculus, Calculus I, II, III, or Differential Equations; Knowledge of University of Maryland resources (i.e. registration, financial aid, resident life, etc.); Experience working with students of diverse ethnic backgrounds.
The program seeks applicants who are "engaged" in one or more other areas at the university such as study abroad, research, internships, organizations, and leadership positions.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
-Leadership role as the Resident Assistant in the dormitory for the duration of the five-week program (June 28 – July 31, 2009)
-Facilitate supplemental instruction sessions Monday-Thursday from 4:30—6:30 PM (including creating course syllabus)
-Attend weekly staff meetings and other events with the students
-Assist students with making a successful transition to the University of Maryland
-Assume professional responsibility in dress, manner, and speech for the duration of the program
-Attend Summer Staff Kick-off Luncheon, Mentor Training, and the Opening and Closing Receptions
-Other duties as assigned
POSITON AVAILABLE:
June 28 – July 31, 2009
SALARY:
Room and board from June 28 – July 31, 2009
Students will be allowed to work and/or take courses concurrently.
